Primary Purpose:

  • Maintain, repair and install commercial electric and gas kitchen appliances utilizing a preventative maintenance program.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education: High School diploma required or GED acceptable          

Certification: Valid Texas driver’s license, Eligible for coverage under the district’s vehicle insurance program

 

Minimum Experience:  

Three years of work experience in repair and maintenance of commercial kitchen appliances and refrigeration equipment
  • Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Certificate (HVAC) or Texas State Journeyman Electrical License preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  • Use tools and equipment relating to repair of kitchen equipment
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits, wiring and operating principles of motors
  • Knowledge of current codes and ordinances
  • Ability to work on low voltage and high voltage equipment, single or three-phase circuits

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Equipment Installation, Maintenance, and Repair

  1. Install, maintain, and repair all gas, electric, refrigerated, and non-refrigerated kitchen equipment.
  2. Diagnose equipment issues and recommend necessary repairs, service, or replacement of parts.
  3. Perform preventative maintenance inspections on tools and equipment to ensure safe and effective operating conditions.
  4. Train school staff on necessary preventative and regular maintenance techniques and procedures to improve life of equipment.
 

Inventory and Procurement

  1. Maintain an inventory of all kitchen equipment and recommend supplies and equipment for purchase.
  2. Keep records of warranty information and maintenance history for all equipment.
  3. Request purchase orders for necessary parts and supplies to complete repairs.
 

Work Order Management and Documentation

  1. Complete work order requests from assigned schools promptly and efficiently.
  2. Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and other reference materials to assist with repairs.
  3. Inspect completed jobs to ensure proper functioning and clean work areas.
  4. Coordinate with school cafeteria team leads and staff to schedule maintenance and minimize disruption to meal service.
 

HVAC and Emergency Repairs

  1. Assist with HVAC repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques as needed.
  2. Respond to emergency equipment failures, including after-hours and weekend service calls.
 

Safety and Compliance

  1. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing.
  2. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  3. Correct unsafe conditions in work areas and promptly report any issues that cannot be immediately fixed to a supervisor.
  4. Ensure all city, county, state, and federal regulations are followed when performing maintenance and repairs.
  5. Coordinate work with outside contractors for major repairs or warranty-related service.
 

General Duties and Transportation

  1. Transport food and inventory between the warehouse and campuses as needed.
  2. Maintain department vehicles and tools in a clean and organized manner.
  3. Utilize time effectively, work independently, and manage job responsibilities efficiently.
 

Other

  1. Maintain a professional attitude in all communication (email, written, and verbal) with Child Nutrition staff, teachers, administrators, community and vendors.
  2. Participate in training to meet annual professional standards and stay up to date with repair guidelines.
  3. Demonstrate strong organizational and planning skills.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

  • Hand tools, small power tools, volt, ohm, amp meters and all other tools related to kitchen equipment.
  • Desktop computer (windows based) 

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress 

Tools/Equipment Used: Hand tools; power tools 

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions 

Motion: Frequent walking, setting up and climbing ladders, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching 

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (50 pounds and over) on a daily basis 

Environment: Work mostly inside, exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent district wide travel
